  I guess I overplanned in terms of arriving on time. I have a really bad habit of trying to show up exactly on time. Which means when I get lost or run into obstacles, I'm late. Trying to avoid this today, I left a bit early. Unfortunately everything went smoothly, and now I'm sitting here in "the green room" with 40 minutes to burn.

When I arrived, they initially thought that I was here for "off the record" - a sports talk show. I thought for a split second about bluffing, but decided against it, knowing nothing about sports ;)

There's no food in the green room, but there is a makeup person on a break talking to someone on the phone. C  |  #

Some further reading on how to "Getting Serial" that I blogged previously... Michael Watkins outlines five strategies for dealing with "The Urgent vs. The Important".

Specifically;

1) Get clear about your priorities. You can do what you haven't prioritized. If its important, stick it at the top of the list.

2) If you have to work tactically, make sure that its productive. Its way to easy to devote energy towards reacting to things that are thrown at you. Avoid this.

3) Delegate more, and delegate more effectively. Its okay to delegate elements of strategic development to various members of your team. This will not only help you to focus on the big picture items that need your attention, it will also help them develop their skills.

4) Establish boundaries. Set aside sacred time each day and devote it to the things that really need your attention. Vigorously defend this time at all costs.

5) Make sure that you are part of the solution. Are you taking time to figure out how to prevent problems? Simply solving them when they come up isn't enough, you must spend time doing proactive problem prevention.

All great advice. I'm definitely going to subscribe to this blog.

During the coming ICANN meeting, I am going to take a different tack with my listening style. Usually in these settings, I am listening to understand a) if I agree with a person, b) if they are lying to me, c) if they are trying manipulate me, d) if they are trying to confuse me, or e) if they are trying to twist my words to their advantage, and so on.

This requires a lot of energy, most of it negative. Despite the fact that my skills in listening in these styles has prevented me from being a complete political victim (I’m batting about .500) I don’t think that the results are really worth expending that much negative energy anymore. Why should I get my wires all crossed up just to stay one step ahead of a paid lobbyist that doesn’t even care what they are saying so long as it helps their client.

So, this coming week, I am going to try to practice the principles of charitable listening which rest on the following four pillars:

  • The other uses words in the ordinary way;
  • The other makes true statements;
  • The other makes valid arguments;
  • The other says something interesting.

It will be interesting to see how far I get with this. There’s more on this subject over at Wikipedia of course. Wish me luck

  Paul Twomey, ICANN's CEO made some pronouncements yesterday...
President and CEO of ICANN, Dr Paul Twomey, left no doubt as to the depth of the problems brought to light by the Registerfly fiasco, and to the amount of work to be done to ensure that it does not happen again.

Its too bad that the article doesn't point out the fact that most, if not all, of the action items on "Paul's List" have actually been in his court for a number of years. I didn't see any issues on the list that he and his staff haven't failed to address in some way over the last seven years.

This isn't an ICANN issue, this isn't a community issue, this is an issue related to Paul's failure to drive important issues to closure during his tenure. This smells more like someone concerned about their job than someone concerned about the welfare of the registration community.
