Actually, being pushed through the line-ups wasn't unheard of. Generally speaking, people pitched in and lent a hand when someone in the line ran out of gas.
What was really bizarre was when the gas station itself ran out of gas. A couple of times while I was motoring around try to stock up on essentials for the weekend I would pass a gas station in total chaos only to drive by it again ten minutes later and find it completely deserted.
